A timeless Ukrainian classic.

The plot is based on a famous short story by Mykola Hohol, published in 1832, and is a fairy tale set in an 18th century Ukrainian village. The story is about love between a poor blacksmith and the most beautiful girl in the village and involves passion, intrigues, adventures, a pact with the devil and travel to the heart of the Empire to fulfil the quest. It is a colourful show representing Ukrainian folk culture and is full of traditional singing and dancing.

The play is performed by Richmond Ukrainian Social Club’s teenage drama collective organised in 2022 for Ukrainian refugees who arrived in the UK fleeing the ongoing Russian invasion.

The play is in Ukrainian language; a detailed scene by scene description in English will be provided.
