Ukrainian Social Club – The Night Before Christmas “Ніч перед Різдвом”
By Mykola Hohol | adapted by Oleksand Zhyla | directed by Evheniia Shymshyrian | produced by Alina Luts
A timeless Ukrainian classic.
The plot is based on a famous short story by Mykola Hohol published in 1932 and is a fairy tale set in the 18th century Ukrainian village. The story is about love between a poor blacksmith and the most beautiful girl in the village and involves passion, intrigues, adventures, pact with the devil and travel to the heart of the Empire to fulfil the quest. It is a colourful show representing Ukrainian folk culture and is full of traditional singing and dancing. The play is performed by Richmond Ukrainian Social Club’s teenage drama collective organised in 2022 for Ukrainian refugees who arrived in the UK fleeing the ongoing Russia’s invasion.
The play is in Ukrainian language; the detailed scene by scene description in English will be provided.
