by ANTON CHEKHOV translated by BEA SVISTUNENKO directed by NAMOO CHAE LEE

“Madàme, in my time, I’ve seen more women than you’ve had hot dinners!”

Yelena Ivanova Popova has not left her home since her husband’s death almost a year ago. When a grumbling stranger shows up one day demanding she repays her husband’s debts, emotions run high, guns are drawn and things get heated. Is it a recipe for disaster, or the beginning of an unlikely love story? Let the battle of the sexes commence…

A new translation by Bea Svistunenko and directed by OT Resident Assistant Director, Namoo Chae Lee, this Chekhov one-act play is a wildly funny romp. Bea is soon to appear in Testmatch, a new play by Kate Attwell playing at the OT from 20 April and Namoo previously assisted on Meetings and Northanger Abbey.

Tickets are £15 and include a glass of wine or soft drink. Please note that this event is a staged reading, without décor.

This OT tradition of lunchtime plays harks back to when a group of actors adopted a room above the Orange Tree pub, always performing at lunchtime when there was daylight, and placing chairs around the edge of the room to create a space in the round. Audiences have always spoken about the OT tradition of a lunchtime play so highly, that we want to bring them back for 2024 – and here they are!
