What is Directing Lab?
Directing Lab is a hands-on introduction to directing for anyone keen to deepen their understanding of how theatre is made in the rehearsal room. With a strong focus on working with text and actors, this course equips you with the tools, confidence and creative language needed to shape bold, truthful performances.
Across five weeks, you’ll explore a range of directing practices and practitioner-led techniques, while developing your own artistic voice in a supportive and collaborative environment. It is a space to take creative risks, ask questions and discover how your instincts can drive the work on stage.
You’ll learn how to unlock text, communicate ideas clearly and work imaginatively with actors – gaining practical experience that you can immediately apply to your own projects.
Through this course, you will:
Develop strong skills in analysing and deconstructing texts for the stage
Learn to respond creatively and confidently to rehearsal-room stimuli
Build collaborative, dynamic working relationships with actors
Explore practical exercises for voice, movement and imagination
Create character, shape scenes and bring stories to life
Everyone will be expected to take part in some performance exercises so everyone can practise directing techniques.
Directing Lab is an introductory course open to anyone 18+. No previous experience is necessary – just a sense of curiosity.
Ideal for emerging directors, theatre-makers, and performers looking to expand their directing practice, Directing Lab offers a rigorous, inspiring foundation in the craft of directing.
