adapted and directed by KELLY HUNTER

Twelfth Night sees Flute Theatre return to the OT following productions of The Tempest in 2016 and A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2017 and 2018.

Flute Theatre creates ground-breaking productions of Shakespeare for autistic individuals and their families. Up to 12 participants for each performance sit with the actors on the OT stage, and experience Shakespeare’s story through sensory games, which everyone plays together. Each performance is adapted to the specific needs of the participants, however complex they may be.

Flute Theatre are ten years old this year. They now perform their shows for autistic individuals around the world, adapting the performances to the language spoken by the participants. Last year, their Double Pericles won the 2023 Offie for best Production of a short run – they performed with autistic people in the UK, Romania, Bulgaria, Spain and  Serbia. Since May 2022, they have performed with Ukrainian refugee families at the Open Door Situational Centre in Sofia, Bulgaria. Last autumn, Kelly Hunter directed their production of The Tempest for autistic individuals in Lima, Peru for La Teatro Plaza. Since 2018, they have run a community project named ‘Celebrating Autism’ for autistic individuals and their families in West London- now performing regularly at Riverside Studios.

This new production at the Orange Tree Theatre of Twelfth Night for autistic people will be Flute’s 4th full show specifically created for audiences on the spectrum, using Kelly Hunter’s Hunter ‘Heartbeat games’.

I am very happy to be returning to the Orange Tree this year to create our 4th production of Shakespeare for autistic people” said Kelly. “The Orange Tree may be little, but it has a huge heart and knows no bounds in imagination and ambition. A perfect fit for Flute.”

This summer, to celebrate their tenth birthday, Flute Theatre are creating the very first International Shakespeare Festival for autistic individuals at the Riverside Studios (August 5-31). During the festival, families with autistic family members as well as those displaced by war, whom they have played with over the last ten years, will join their community of autistic individuals for a month of Flute Theatre multilingual performances.
