Life’s always easier in retrospect. And I actually wouldn’t change what happened next for anything.
Alice and Phil bare every messy, painful, hilarious, irritating, delightful, loving detail of their relationship as it bends and shifts to everything life throws at them. Nothing goes unshared …

Writer Jack Thorne (Channel 4’s Skins and This Is England) thrillingly amplifies disabled voices in this witty, impassioned and intimate play.

Following its 2015 premiere at Edinburgh Festival Fringe as a Graeae Theatre Company and Theatre Royal Plymouth co-production, The Solid Life of Sugar Water went on a UK tour and transferred to the National Theatre for a critically acclaimed run in 2016.

★★★★ “Unflinching…I can’t remember when I last saw a play that was at once so forthright and so delicate” The Observer on the National Theatre production.

Jack Thorne’s writing is fearless, embracing those awkward and intimate moments of life and celebrating them for what they are” Disability Arts Online

This production is directed by Indiana Lown-Collins, winner of the JMK Award 2022. Indiana was the Assistant Director and Producer at the Guildford Shakespeare Company (2019-2021) where she was Movement Director on The Tales of Hans Christian Andersen (GSC); Associate Director on Macbeth; Assistant Director on As You Like It, She Stoops to Conquer, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Twelfth Night, Robin Hood, Alice and Wonderland, Romeo and Juliet and The Legend of King Arthur. Other recent credits include Assistant Director on Julius Caesar (Shakespeare’s Globe), working alongside director and previous JMK Award-winner Diane Page.

The JMK Trust was founded in the memory James Menzies-Kitchin – a theatre director of thrilling promise – to give practical learning opportunities to theatre directors of similar ability and vision. The JMK Award allows one such director a year to stage their own production of a classic text. www.jmktrust.org

The OT have produced two JMK Award-winning productions to critical acclaim: Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu directed Little Baby Jesus by Arinzé Kene in 2019, and Diane Page directed Statements after an Arrest under the Immorality Act in 2021.
