Deputy Stage Manager and Assistant Stage Manager


We are recruiting for a Deputy Stage Manager and Assistant Stage Manager for TWO BILLION BEATS at the Orange Tree, a new play by Sonali Bhattacharyya, directed by Nimmo Ismail.

Rehearsals begin on 4 January 2022, with the show running from 5 February to 5 March.

Job Title:                Deputy Stage Manager & Assistant Stage Manager

Responsible to:      Company Stage Manager

Purpose:                 To support the Company Stage Manager and Production Manager in the effective running of the rehearsal process, the technical rehearsals and during the show run.

Press Night – Wednesday 9 Feb
Final Show – Saturday 5 March

DSM – Responsibilities:
  • Fulfil all usual DSM responsibilities during the rehearsal period and technical rehearsals.
  • Along with the production manager and other members of the stage management team, liaise with the creative team and facilitate their requirements to the best standard possible.
  • Run the rehearsal room to a high standard, ensuring the needs of the company and the director are met
  • Act as the conduit for communicating relevant information between the rehearsal room and other departments, ensuring that information is documented and shared where required.
  • Complete rehearsal notes and calls as agreed with the Company Stage Manager.
  • Keep the show book up to date and legible.
  • Operate LX, sound and AV cues as necessary during the run of the production.
  • To undertake shared laundry duties and props maintenance along with the rest of the stage management team as agreed with the Head of Production.
  • Liaise with front of house team to co-ordinate house opening and show start.  
  • Complete show reports in a timely manner and maintain communication with the creative team throughout the run.
  • Attend & minute production meetings as required

Skills and experience:
Essential
Demonstrable experience in relevant professional roles
A team player with the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels both internally and externally
Able to cope with the demands of working flexibly for the hours that a theatre inevitably demands

Desirable
First Aid Qualification
Fire Safety trained

Title of post: Deputy Stage Manager

Salary: £448 per week during rehearsals, £459 per week during show call plus holiday pay and overtime. Contracted under the UK Theatre/ Equity Commercial Theatre agreement.

ASM – Responsibilities:
  • Fulfil all usual ASM responsibilities during the rehearsal period, technical rehearsals, and during the run of the show.
  • Prop sourcing, making, purchasing as required
  • Keep appropriate paperwork pertaining to props, show cues, and expenditure, in liaison with CSM
  • Along with the production manager and other members of the stage management team, liaise with the creative team and facilitate their requirements to the best standard possible.
  • Support the CSM in the running of the technical rehearsal to a high standard, ensuring the needs of the company and the director are met.
  • Assist in the technical set-up, running, and power down of the show where required
  • Manage the props and costume setting during the run, and carry out maintenance where necessary in collaboration with the CSM
  • To undertake shared laundry duties along with the rest of the stage management team as agreed with the CSM.

Skills and experience:

Essential
Demonstratable experience in relevant professional roles

Able to cope with the demands of working flexibly for the hours that a theatre inevitably demands

Desirable
Prop making skills
Some technical competence/ experience
First Aid Qualification
Fire Safety trained      

Title of post: Assistant Stage Manager

Salary: £445 per week, plus holiday pay and overtime. Contracted under the UK Theatre/ Equity Commercial Theatre agreement.

Hours: These are full-time positions. Hours are dependent on agreed rehearsal times and show running times. 43 hours per week during rehearsal weeks, and 46 hours per week during show weeks.
