Assistant Stage Manager - The Solid Life of Sugar Water


To support the Company Stage Manager and Production Manager in the effective running of the rehearsal process, the technical rehearsals and during the show run.

Job Title: Assistant Stage Manager

Responsible to: Company Stage Manager

Production Details: The Solid Life of Sugar Water by Jack Thorne, directed by Indiana Lown-Collins (winner of the JMK award 2022). 

This play touches on emotive themes, and audience members will be provided emotive content guidance before attending. This includes themes of loss, and miscarriage. 

We will be working with a team that will include d/Deaf and disabled members, some of whom will have access requirements.

Notable dates:
Rehearsals Start – Monday 12th September 2022
Tech week – Monday 10th October
First Preview –  Saturday 15th October
Press Night – Wednesday 19th October
Final Show – Saturday 12th November

ASM – Responsibilities:

  • Fulfil all usual ASM responsibilities during the rehearsal period, technical rehearsals, and during the run of the show.
  • Prop sourcing, making, purchasing as required
  • Keep appropriate paperwork pertaining to props, show cues, and expenditure, in liaison with CSM
  • Along with the production manager and other members of the stage management team, liaise with the creative team and facilitate their requirements to the best standard possible.
  • Support the DSM in running the rehearsal room to a high standard, ensuring the needs of the company and the director are met.
  • Support the CSM in the running of the technical rehearsal to a high standard, ensuring the needs of the company and the director are met.
  • Assist in the technical set-up, running, and power down of the show where required
  • Manage the props and costume setting during the run, and carry out maintenance where necessary in collaboration with the CSM
  • To undertake shared laundry duties along with the rest of the stage management team as agreed with the CSM.
  • Attend & minute production meetings as required

Skills and experience:

Essential

  • Demonstratable experience in relevant professional roles.
  • A team player with the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels both internally and externally
  • Able to cope with the demands of working flexibly for the hours that a theatre inevitably demands

Desirable

  • Prop making skills
  • Some technical competence/ experience
  • First Aid Qualification
  • Some knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL)
  • Experience working on productions with variety of access requirements
  • Fire Safety trained

Title of post: Assistant Stage Manager

Salary: £445 per week plus holiday pay and overtime. Contracted under the UK Theatre/ Equity Commercial Theatre agreement.

Hours: This is a full-time position. Hours are dependent on agreed rehearsal times and show running times. 43 hours per week during rehearsal weeks, and 46 hours per week during show weeks.
