I am delighted to have become your new membership patron. Richmond is so lucky to have the Orange Tree Theatre, an intimate venue and the only permanent in-the-round theatre in London. It has, rightly, attracted a loyal, discerning audience, as I know from the many occasions I have appeared there. From its beginnings in a room above the Orange Tree pub in 1971, Sam Walters’ theatre has become one of London’s most respected off-West End theatres. And now it has turned forty – and has much to celebrate.
None of this comes cheaply. With cuts in government and Arts Council funding, the challenges facing the Orange Tree Theatre are greater than ever. Now, more than ever, the theatre needs to increase its membership numbers to enable it to go on producing first-class plays, nurturing talent, and making theatre accessible to all.
